The Environment sector of the AICS Office in Maputo plays a central role in contributing to the achievement of the “Planet” pillar objectives of the 2030 Agenda, promoting the sustainable management of natural resources (water, soil and biodiversity), biodiversity conservation, and the strengthening of scientific research, while recognising the blue economy as one of the strategic pillars for the sustainable development of Southern Africa.
Interventions in the environmental sector aim at the protection of ecosystems, biodiversity conservation, environmental education, and the strengthening of institutional capacities. Among the rehabilitation projects, strategic infrastructures such as the Inhaca Marine Biology Station, the Maputo Natural History Museum, and the UEM Biotechnology Centre stand out. There are also initiatives such as Summer Schools dedicated to mangroves, which promote academic and cultural exchange between Mozambican and Italian students.
Particularly noteworthy is the transboundary Miombo management project between Mozambique and Zimbabwe, considered the green lung of Southern Africa.
