The public healthcare systems of Mozambique and Malawi continue to face significant structural challenges, including shortages of essential equipment and medicines, as well as an insufficient number of healthcare professionals, who often lack specialised training. The leading causes of mortality remain infectious diseases, particularly HIV/AIDS and malaria, while at the same time there has been a significant increase in deaths related to non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as cardiovascular diseases and cancers.
In this context, AICS also contributes to strengthening the health response in the fight against major infectious diseases through its support to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. As part of the replenishment for the 2027–2029 cycle, Italy allocated a contribution of EUR 150 million, of which 5% is reserved for technical assistance interventions promoted by Italy in support of the three major infectious diseases – initiatives under the Global Fund 5% Call.
The priorities of AICS – Maputo Office therefore focus on the overall strengthening of healthcare systems, improving access to prevention and control services for infectious and non-communicable diseases, promoting the training of healthcare personnel, developing telemedicine, and ensuring more equitable access to healthcare services for persons with disabilities.
Within this framework, the interventions aim to improve the health conditions of populations and expand access to quality healthcare services, contributing to greater inclusion and equity, in line with Sustainable Development Goal 3, dedicated to health and well-being for all.
